YEAH FOR PRESIDENT-ELECT BIDEN

First off, I am not an American citizen, but my life and well-being have been negatively impacted by the Trump presidency. Many Americans do not realise that the USA’s policies on everything affect the whole world. So this is why so many of us non-Americans have felt such a vested interest in the outcome of American presidential election.

Secondly, a great many of my friends are Americans and it has pained me to see how unhappy and embarrassed they have felt over the past four years. Their president made many of them say they are ashamed to be United States citizens. How sad is that?

Never has the familiar phrase, “United we stand, divided we fall” been more painfully illustrated than during the past four years. The Trump presidency created more separation in the United States of America than anyone else during any period in my memory. Now, we have HOPE that the new president will right many of the wrongs… and the list is long.

By backing out of long-standing international accords, Trump drove wedges between the USA and its traditional allies.

Trump’s divisive rhetoric caused rifts between family members. I have several friends whose siblings are not speaking to them because they did not blindly follow Trump. I have been told of one case, where a mother has disowned her daughter.

On one hand he swore to defend the workers but in fact he repeatedly betrayed them by allowing corporations to cut back on-the-job protection, fair pay and benefits. His policies made it harder for workers to have health insurance, to save for retirement, and have access to training programs. Under Trump workers had less of a voice in their workplace, and minorities were more discriminated against.

The environment took blow after blow from his “squander-now” policies.

The drug trade, human trafficking, illegal organ harvesting, gun escalation and the harbouring of criminals. All this is too unsavoury to contemplate, but even a single internet search will show how stats for these heinous crimes soared through the roof during the past four years.

Trump immigration policies destroyed minority communities and can we even bear to think about the children who have been separated from their families? When the parents could not be located he had the gall to say – Guess what those mothers and fathers don’t want their kids back – in reality, few refugees have addresses.

The brazenness he demonstrated is appalling. He openly snarled and dismissed all those he considers his inferiors.

Trump’s “tremendous” mishandling of the Corona virus pandemic is responsible for 100s of thousands of deaths in the USA

Trump incited hatred between racial groups. Remember when during the first debate he told those Proud Boys, Stand down, but stand by. People of colour have never been angrier, and with more justified reasons.

Trump insulted, multiple times, the leadership and citizens of the USA’s northern and southern neighbours with the insidious wall, unethical trade practises, and more. He was the most powerful man in the world – but he never understood, that with power comes responsibility. He was a bully.

His attitude of scorn towards women is obvious not only in the press accounts, but also by the way he treats his wife. She may be many things but no one deserves such disdainful behaviour from Hubby.

His questionable business and investment dealings are legend, before and during the presidency.

And how about the way he toodles off to play golf whenever he gets too stressed-out. And even today when he knew Biden would be confirmed as the winner of the presidency. What a user. What a loser.

I could go on and on, but to me the two worst things Trump did are:

He subliminally urged his constituents to allow their base insecurities, prejudices, and fears to rule their behaviour. He “showed” them it’s OK to turn a blind eye to the negativity and cruelty that surrounds us. When he says, America First – he means ME first – hardly the Christian values he espouses.

Secondly, he used his Svengali personality to trick nearly half the US voters into choosing him. I am GRATEFUL to slightly more than half the voting population who did not get sucked in.

I know I will still be looking at his offensive, bloated mug for a while longer. He has once again insulted the highest office of his country with his boorish, ill-mannered behaviour. He claims he will not leave the White House. This idiocy makes him look like even a bigger fool.

I cannot wait until he is yesterday’s bad news. I hope that all Americans will soon be able to put him out of their minds, and that they’ll all try to erase the stain he has left behind, and truly make America a great and prosperous country for all..

Trump Baby – you have been DISMISSED – FIRED – LET GO – forever !

    1. Dearest Loretta, yes it happened! You and all of us are free from a future without Trump as president. Hopefully though, Americans will have a “Come to Jesus” moment within themselves. It is time to reach out and find common ground so that the divisions can lessen. Hopefully too, people will see the opportunities they have and not focus so much on what is still lacking. Priorities, prioritie, priorities…

  2. You covered all of the bases Joanna. Like you, I have so many dear friends that live in the USA and they have been under the thumb of that tyrant for 4 years too long. Let’s all try and breathe a sigh of long awaited relief…..and let’s get this covid bug under control soon. I miss Mexico so much but am resolved that I can’t travel until I get a jab in the arm.

    1. And Mexico misses you. Now that Trump’s exit seems like a done deal…, of course we want to see the virus follow him. It is almost 8 months since social distancing began and oh are we tired of it. But as trying as it is, we have so much to be grateful for. And when you come to Merida, we’ll have a more robust appreciation of all that life has to offer us….

  3. Well said. Joanna.
I suspect the long knives will come out now. The GOP stalwarts were embarrassed by his crass behavior. He’ll not only go under the bus but they will make sure the back tires get him. He ticked off some very sharp people in his own party. You might want to put on some popcorn, it is going to be a good show.

    1. Yes, you’re right Norm… Trump ha angered many powerful people. He’d be wise to make his exit as quickly as he can. It has been a sad chapter in American history but the really scary part is the almost half of the US voters wanted him back for 4 more years. Hopefully they will think again and clearer thinking will prevail. There have been enough hysterics to last us for a while…

  4. Just glad his reign of divisiveness is over, although he can still do a lot of damage over the next weeks. The “transition” will be a series of temper tantrums and lies on his part. As you say, an embarassment for us Americans.

    1. Yes, Trump’s reign is over but not the divisiveness he promoted. It will be important for American politicians to address what their constituents need, and also to reach out to those who feel such anger and animosity. They are obviously upset about something that’s important to them… Also the citizens need to take a reality check. They live in the USA, as Biden said, it is “a land of possibilities.” Yes it is harder for some than others to acheive their hopes and desires. But Obama reminded us that,, “Yes we can.” Good leadership is important but “we the people” also have some soul searching and hard work to do.

  5. What a buffoon!! He turned the USA from the world’s most forward and prosperous country into a laughingstock. I hope and pray Biden can right and fix all the wrongs. I was always under the impression the leader of a country should be held in high regard and beyond reproach but we were all fooled, weren’t we. I think of Obama who tried to help the poor and underprivileged and had no scandal that I am aware in his eight years of tenure.

    1. Yes Obama was a wonderful leader, and remember, the current President-elect was second-in-command during that Administration. I am sure that seeing President Obama every day was a great opportunity for Biden to learn and grow, He also went into that position, a seasoned politician and a man who had already been challenged by some of life’s cruelest blows. I have hope for the USA…

  6. Hi Joanna – Trump is horrible in so many ways and has always been unfit for presidential office. So glad he is out. It was a great day for our nation yesterday evidenced by the crowds dancing and cheering in the streets. We’re keeping our fingers crossed that he will leave, if not gracefully, but without further damage to the world. – Thanks to all the expats who took the time, trouble and expense to vote at a critical time in our history. — All that said, my husband and I are very happy indeed to be living in Mexico. May the Universe bless us all in the following weeks to come until president elect Biden takes over. It’s a proud moment for the USA to have a woman and a woman of color as vice president elect. About time! xoxo

    1. Thank you for your comment Alex. So muh about Saturday was important for the USA and for the world. You highlight the finest points… number one of course is that Trump is gone. He will yell and scream because he doesn’t know how to react in any other way and hopefully he won’t do any further damage before they pry him loose from the Oval Office. I believe Biden is the best man possible for president. He is calm and careful and seems to be well liked by most politicians of both parties. Kamala Harris… there are no words that adequately convey how happy I am that she will be vice president. But like you, I am glad to be watching the drama unfold from a distance. Be well, my friend.
